Dunbar RNLI’s latest volunteers Nicola and Kerry pass out as shore crew.

Nicola and Kerry are the newest members of Dunbar RNLI shore crew, having completed their pass out assessments. Nicola who started volunteering in June passed out alongside Kerry who joined after a recruitment event focused on inviting women to become involved in search and rescue

Kerry, a local tattoo, artist said: ‘The Women in Search and Rescue evening has changed my life. They are a great bunch of people and have really helped during my training.’

The shore crew role focuses on making the boat ready for launch and assisting the crew during search and rescue operations. Nicola said: ‘As an avid kayaker the sea is a big part of my life and I know the importance of the RNLI when things go wrong. Joining as shore crew has been the perfect way to start my RNLI journey.’

Dunbar RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Ian Wilson said: ‘The open event helped to break down the barriers of entry for women to join the RNLI. Congratulations to Nicola and Kerry on passing out as shore crew.’

· Established in 1808, 16 years before the formation of the RNLI, Dunbar Lifeboat Station is one of the oldest in Scotland and is located on the south side of the mouth of the Firth of Forth.

· Since its formation, its volunteer crews have been honoured with 12 awards for gallantry.

· It operates two lifeboats – the Trent class all-weather lifeboat (ALB) John Neville Taylor, moored at Torness Power Station, and the D-class inshore lifeboat (ILB) David Lauder, which launches from Dunbar Harbour.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands.
