  • the meanings of the lifeguard flags

  • volunteering and the role of charities.

Module 1 - What do we do?

This module helps pupils to understand what the RNLI is, how it started and about the various volunteers who form the backbone of the organisation.

There are two lesson plans in the module:

  1. The history of the RNLI - Famous rescues, an RNLI timeline, local rescues.
  2. RNLI volunteers - the role of RNLI volunteers, what it takes to become an RNLI crew member, lifeguards.

Module 2 - where do we work

This module focuses on where the RNLI operates, with an emphasis on lifeboat stations.  It helps pupils to learn about the charity’s work on inland waterways and how the RNLI responds to different situations with different rescue vehicles.

There are two lesson plans in the module:

1. Lifeboat stations – Where is our nearest lifeboat station, why do we have lifeboat stations, finding the best site for a lifeboat station

2. Rivers and coasts The RNLI’s work inland, how coastal features affect rescues

Module 3 - How do we help?

This module looks at how the RNLI responds to emergencies. It covers the theme of lifeboat design and materials, plus an activity about communication in which pupils can use role play to report various coastal emergencies.

There are two lesson plans in the module:

  1. Lifeboat design - Floating and sinking, investigating boat hull shapes, boat materials
  2. Responding to emergencies - Types of emergency, Calling 999 or 112, Lifeguards and beach safety flags

Module 4 - Why are we needed?

This module helps pupils to understand why we need the RNLI. It introduces the themes of dangers on the coast and the role of lifeguards.

There are two lesson plans in the module:

  1. Dangers on the coast – Tides and waves, rip currents, cliffs and rocks, boating safety, beach safety flags, beach safety rules, swimming safely, surfing and inflatables.
  2. The role of lifeguards – What lifeguards do, meet a real lifeguard online.

Module 5 - Charities and fundraising

This short module helps pupils to understand what the voluntary and charity sector do and about the importance of fundraising for the RNLI.

There are two lesson plans in the module:

  1. The role of charity – What charities are, what charities do, what volunteers are and what they do
  2. Helping the RNLI – What the RNLI needs money for, how the RNLI relies on fundraising, how schools and children can help: ideas for fundraising.
