Safeguarding is a fundamental priority to keep people safe across the RNLI. We are making significant progress in improving our understanding and management of safeguarding across the charity – helping to keep our people safe and supporting the future sustainability of the RNLI.

Our safeguarding policy and procedure were developed in 2017 and focused on children (under 18s) and vulnerable adults (those with social or care needs). In 2020, one of our main regulators, the Charity Commission in the UK, made changes to the definition and scope of safeguarding in a charity.

Safeguarding is about protecting all people; protecting a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights; and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect.

Over the past 2 years, we have been working to this wider scope and definition of safeguarding, so we are updating our policy, guidance and resources to reflect our current working practices and provide greater clarity.

Safeguarding webinar – 23 July

On Tuesday 23 July at 11am, join the Safeguarding Team and people from around the RNLI to talk through some of the key aspects of the updated policy and how we approach and manage safeguarding across the charity – we hope to see many of you there and a recording will be available afterwards. The link to join the webinar will be shared in the regular Volunteer Experience Update email on Friday 19 June.

If you have any questions, please speak to your manager or get in touch with [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support to ensure our people and the communities we serve can trust and depend on the RNLI to keep them and their families safe.
