The latest RNLI Our Watch Progress Update is now available
See the progress we made together as one crew last winter.
Everybody gives their support and relentless effort to help save lives, so it’s important you know how we’re making a difference, what has been working well and what we need to focus on next as we progress towards our goals.
What is featured in the Winter update?
In this edition, we share some of the impact we’re seeing from our lifesaving work, our International and Water Safety efforts, and our performance on the latest volunteer survey. We also cover how we’re ensuring our future lifesaving service is sustainable and secure.
You’ll see that we’re continuing to rescue and assist increasing numbers of people. You’ll also see that the amount of risk and the number of serious water-related incidents happening around our coasts remains high – highlighting the ongoing importance of targeted prevention activity as a key part of our lifesaving effect.
We know that a large number of these incidents relate to suicide and suspected self-harm - almost 1 in every 3 serious incidents that crews responded to in 2021. Given our involvement with these tragedies, we have a clear responsibility to prepare, protect and support our people who are involved with suicide-related incidents – which we’re doing through increased TRiM support. We are also partnering with experts to understand how we can best contribute to the prevention of water-based suicide.
On a final note, the proportion of Female crew has seen the largest quarterly increase we’ve measured yet, improving by 0.4%. This increase is almost as much in one quarter as the 0.5% increase that we saw over the previous 2 years in total. I’m delighted to see that our efforts to increase recruitment of female crew are proving successful, which is helping to make the RNLI more a diverse and inclusive place to volunteer.
