2024 and counting
Find out what happened at the 2024 live event and how you can help build momentum as we look forward to our 200th birthday.
The countdown is on to our historic 200th birthday in 2024.
Yesterday evening, volunteers, staff, family and friends joined in the first-ever event to get ready for our bicentenary, broadcast live from The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Thank you to everyone who joined online, and to the team at the Lifeboat Gallery who were able to come along in person with family and friends while social distancing and staying safe.
This event is not to be missed. From delving into never before seen parts of our amazing archive, to hearing from our volunteers about what they are doing to get ready for our historic 200th birthday and how you can get involved – there’s so much to explore.
Celebrate. Commemorate. Inspire.
2024 will represent the culmination of the amazing lifesaving efforts of thousands of people over 200 years; a moment in time to celebrate our past, our present, and our future. It’s a chance for us all to commemorate those who have come before us, thank our communities today, and inspire future generations of RNLI lifesavers and supporters.
There are plenty of opportunities to join the RNLI’s 200th birthday celebrations …
2024 working groups
A Bicentenary Steering Group is helping oversee a newly formed National Working Group and Regional Panels, which have started to meet in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and the Isle of Man to plan community events and celebrations. You can be part of the planning by getting in touch with RNLI2024@rnli.org.uk
The RNLI 200 Club is a group of up to 200 supporters whose donations will fund the bicentenary campaign. For a contribution of £10,000, each member will be helping to lay the foundations. 200 Club is gaining momentum and members and we would love to hear from anyone interested in joining or helping to promote the opportunity within their networks. You can find out more or get in touch at RNLI2024@rnli.org.uk
Building excitement in your community
From September, our Creative Services Team will be bringing our supporters on the journey, with a special feature about 2024 in our much-loved Lifeboat magazine and new dedicated section of the RNLI website. You can get a first look at the feature in this PDF (PDF 7MB) – and if you get Lifeboat delivered, look out for the feature in print too.
Digital resources are now available for you to help build excitement in your local community too, which you can download from the list below in English or Welsh:

A special thank you to all the volunteers and staff members who took part in the event and helped with the arrangements – so many people and teams have been involved and come together as one crew to make this happen. Thank you for everything you do.
On our watch, we are going to make the RNLI bicentenary a birthday to remember.
