Danny Boyle brings a day to remember to beaches across the UK and Ireland
On Sunday 11 November, communities around the UK and Ireland will gather on beaches to say thank you and goodbye to mark 100 years since Armistice and the end of the First World War.
With beaches and clifftops possibly attracting more coastal walkers for the occasion, this could mean an increased likelihood of an incident.
Especially when we know that each year, more than 180 people die around our British and Irish coastlines. Over half of those who died at the coast last year didn’t intend to go into the water – slips and falls while walking contributed to most coastal deaths.
If you or your family and friends are thinking of visiting any of these beaches, you can stay safe by:
- Taking care near cliff edges and when walking in the dark or slippery conditions • Checking the tide times and weather forecast
- Letting people know where you are going and when you expect to be back
- Taking a charged mobile phone
- Keeping your dog on a lead if you are close to cliff edges or fast flowing water
- If you see someone in trouble – dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard
- Watching out for your friends and family and keep each other in sight amongst the crowds.
