Mayday is here

Our crews are still on call 24/7, but funds are falling. Can you answer our call for help this Mayday?

The coronavirus pandemic means that Mayday looks a little bit different in 2020. Instead of your usual community-based activities, we’ve created a variety of exciting fundraising activities you can do from the safety of your own home. They’re simple, fun and a great way to connect with friends and family online. Whatever fundraising activity you get stuck into, you’ll be doing something amazing during lockdown. Have a look through these fundraising ideas, browse our handy resources and get started!

Does meeting a pal for coffee feel like a distant dream? Connect with friends and family by hosting a virtual Cuppa for the Crew event to raise vital funds for the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crew. Put the kettle on, grab a slice of cake and be a lifesaver.

How to get started

  1. Take a look at the Cuppa for the Crew guide and choose how you're going to host.
  2. Set up an RNLI fundraising page on JustGiving to explain why you're raising money.
  3. Spread the word! Invite your friends and family and suggest they donate the savings they've made during lockdown on the cost of a takeaway coffee.

Top tip - Why not theme your event to Mayday by making it yellow - wear a yellow top or bake a yellow cake!

Who’s the brainiest in your family or group of friends? Put it to the test by hosting a fundraising quiz night online. Perhaps everyone could donate the cost of their usual pub quiz entry fee or night out, to raise funds for the RNLI.

How to get started

  1. Set a date and time for your quiz, depending on whether it's a family quiz or an event for friends.
  2. Decide how you will host the quiz. A video-calling platform such as Zoom works well. Simply set up an account, schedule a meeting and share the link with your attendees.
  3. Set up an RNLI fundraising page on JustGiving and share your page on social media.
  4. Invite friends and family and ask them to make a donation if they'd like to take part. You could consider suggesting a minimum donation of £2 or €3, or the cost of a pub quiz entry fee.
  5. Prepare for the event by downloading the nautical themed question sheet to get you started and let your attendees know how the quiz will work. Remind them to bring a pen and paper! If you're using Zoom, you can also download and add our custom Lifesaver Quiz background. Here's help on how to do it, and make sure you uncheck 'mirror my video' so the background is the correct way round.
  6. Enjoy the quiz and remember to tell your friends and family why you're fundraising for the RNLI. Remember to thank them for their generous donations!
