Tenby's all-weather lifeboat launches from the slipway into the surf on the way to a rescue

'I thought she was gone'

When their daughter was blown out to sea on her paddleboard, two parents can only watch and hope Tenby RNLI get there in time.

30 July 2024. David and Kiki Evans head to Pendine Beach in South Wales for an evening swim. Their daughter Lilly decides to go out on the water with her stand-up paddleboard. What happens next is every parent's worst nightmare.

Tenby lifeboat crew were able to launch to the rescue of Lilly that day thanks to generous donations from supporters like you. Without your support, this story could have had a very different, tragic ending.

If you're heading out on the water on your stand-up paddleboard, follow our safety advice:

  • Never take to the water when there is an offshore wind.
  • Always carry a means of calling for help with you.
  • Always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid.
  • Always wear the correct leash to keep the board attached to you.

And if you spot someone in danger in the water, never try and rescue them yourselves. Always call 999 and alert the coastguard.
