Staying safe on the River Thames

Rivers, reservoirs and lakes might look inviting – but they can pose many hidden dangers.

Our crews on the Thames respond to hundreds of incidents each year, with many people caught out by the river's strong currents and high tides. They can endanger even the strongest swimmers.

If you get into trouble, stay calm and float on your back until you can control your breathing.

And remember, if you see someone in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.
