Sir William Hillary Birthday
4 January marks the birthday of Sir William Hillary, the founder of the RNLI. Watch how his lifesaving vision is carried out by volunteers today.
In 1824, Sir William Hillary wrote an appeal to the British people. Having witnessed devastating shipwrecks around the coast, and the terrible affect it had on communities, he wanted to form an institution. Its goal - to save lives at sea. In his appeal, he detailed how this institution would be dedicated to helping those in need of rescue, no matter who they were or where they come from.
His lifesaving vision is continued by the selfless, dedicated and courageous volunteers of the RNLI today.
