Maldon Fundraising Branch
Here is how the Maldon Branch did in December 2017 and January 2018
The Tesco collection on 14th December raised £912.00 and the committee thank all those who braved the cold during the day. This along with earlier events in the year, a number of donations and money collected via the boxes in various shops and pubs in the district resulted in a Grand Total of £22.278.26 being raised during the year. Very many thanks to all the volunteers, members of the public and numerous organisations for this result.
Two major events have already taken place this year. The “extra” collection on 27th January at Tesco has brought £852.87 into the Branch already. Yet again very many thanks to all the brave souls who ventured out on a cool, even cold, day to help with this event.
The other was the premiere event of the year for raising money. This was the Sponsored Row organised by Maldon Little Ship Club on 20th January. Now believed to be in its fortieth year. The day was cold and dank but this did nothing to curb the enthusiasm of the competitors although it may have reduced the number of spectators viewing the race from Maldon Promenade. With more than 50 rowing boats and gigs crewed by 149 people of varying ages the event has raised £8,700.00 so far and there is still some sponsorship money to be received. As in the past, the event could not take place without the help of many volunteers, a number of safety craft and the sponsorship received from a number of local businesses and other groups. Special thanks go to Blackwater Sailing Club and West Mersea RNLI who brought their safety boats up the river to Maldon for the event.
Some of the prizes awarded were:-
- Most money raised by a boat – Basin Oars from Heybridge
- Most money raised by a Gig – Elletra from Marconi Sailing Club
- Fancy Dress First Prize – Viking Raiders from Burnham RNLI
- 1st Mens singles – Harley Swann
- 1st Ladies Pairs – Jenny Sjollema & Janice
- 1st Gig – Rozinante – Benfleet Coastal Rowing Club
- 1st Harkers Gig – Record Reign – Maldon Gig Club.
These are just a few of the more than thirty prizes awarded to participants in the event.
The Committee thank all those taking part, the volunteers on the day, the behind the scenes helpers in the lead up to the event, all who gave so generously either through sponsoring the entrants or donating money on the day. Also to record our appreciation for the work throughout the year undertaken by Di and John Rogers on behalf of Maldon Little Ship Club.
The next race will take place on Saturday 5th January 2019 so make a date in your diaries’ now
