In 1975 George joined P&O as a Group Deck Cadet. He joined the RNLI as Deputy Divisional Inspector/West in 1990 and was promoted to Divisional Inspector/West in 1995 and Divisional Inspector South in 1998.  He then moved to become Staff Officer Operations (Divisions) at HQ in 2002 and was responsible for dealing with the management of the Divisional Inspectors and the operational divisions.  In 2007 he was appointed as Head of Operations (Lifesaving Delivery).

He has been an active member of the RNLI’s Health and Safety Committee and the staff team chairman of ‘Channel’ since its formation. Since becoming Head of Operations (Lifesaving Delivery) he has had oversight of delivering the Institution’s lifeguard service, sea safety programmes and flood rescue activities.

He lives close to Blandford, Dorset and has maintained his sailing interests throughout his time with the RNLI.
