Kyle of Lochalsh is situated on the mainland of Scotland between the Sound of Sleat to the south and the Inner Sound to the north.  It is the main ferry route to the Isle of Skye.  Lifeboat cover is provided by Portree all-weather lifeboat 19 miles to the north west, and Mallaig all-weather lifeboat 20 miles to the south west.

At a meeting of the Executive Committee held on 23 November 1994 it was resolved that an Atlantic B class Inshore lifeboat station be established at Kyle of Lochalsh in 1995 for one year's evaluation.

1995
B class lifeboat placed on temporary station duty on 23 April.

1997
Atlantic 21 lifeboat withdrawn and Atlantic 75 B740 was placed on service on 28 August.
