Challenging north Cornish coast conditions call for swift responses from RNLI lifeguards
16/08/2012
44 year old John Daniels from the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire had gone surfing at Porthtowan with a friend when the prevailing conditions caught him out. Overwhelmed by the large waves and high winds he was swiftly carried round to an area between Porthtowan and Chapel Porth where a body boarder was helped in an award winning rescue last year.
RNLI lifeguard Tom James immediately headed out on a rescue board but made little headway in the difficult conditions. Fellow RNLI lifeguards Josh Ward and Cameron Caulson launched the inshore rescue boat (IRB) and in an extremely short time had found and rescued John from the huge seas that had developed. The team were so quick that John hadn’t reached the rocks that the surf was pushing him towards.
