Wicklow RNLI came to the assistance of several people over what was a busy Bank Holiday weekend for the lifeboat station.

On Sunday (5 August), volunteer crew came to the assistance of four people after their vessel’s engine failed.

The inshore lifeboat crew diverted just before 4pm from an exercise in Wicklow bay on Sunday afternoon to assist the vessel with engine failure about one mile south east of the harbour.

The six metre local boat with two adults and two children was towed into port and safely secured alongside the East pier.

Lifeboat crew onboard included helm Barry Spenser, Dean Mulvihill and Alan Goucher.

Some 90 minutes later, the inshore lifeboat was launched again after a woman was reported to be in the water at the North Quay.

Fortunately, some quick thinking people had scrambled down onto trawlers and were able to get her out of the water.

The lifeboat crew were able to take the woman from a moored trawler and bring her back to Wicklow Lifeboat Station, she was met on arrival by an ambulance crew.

The woman was not injured but shaken after her ordeal.

Wicklow Lifeboat Press Officer Tommy Dover said: ‘Luckily some of the crew were still in the boathouse and launched the inshore boat immediately after a person ran into the station to alert the crew.

The quick actions of people on the North quay who got the woman out of the water  possibly averted a tragedy. The crew included helm Barry Spenser, Dean Mulvihill and Graham Fitzgerald.

On Monday afternoon (6 August) the all-weather lifeboat  RNLB Annie Blaker under the command of Coxswain Nick Keogh went to the assistance of two people on a jet ski with mechanical problems in Wicklow bay.

The Jet ski and its occupants were landed safely ashore at Wicklow harbour.

Key facts about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
