With the weather forecast suggesting a sunny weekend ahead (8 and 9 September) the RNLI have confirmed that the charity’s lifeguards will be patrolling on 67 beaches across the south west and the Channel Islands on Saturday and Sunday.

With sunshine and surf on the menu, the message to those heading for the coast is to try and visit a lifeguarded beach where the RNLI teams can watch over you.

The beaches covered by RNLI lifeguards include 11 in the Dorset area, 7 in Devon, 42 in Cornwall and 3 in the Channel Islands*.

Steve Instance, RNLI Lifeguard Inspector for the south west, says he hopes those grabbing the rare opportunity to visit the seaside in the sunshine, will head for a beach where a lifeguard team are on duty;

‘Our lifeguards are there to keep people safe, offering useful advice to help prevent accidents and a rapid reaction if something does go wrong. The red and yellow flags indicate lifeguards on duty and highlight the safe bathing areas so you can rest assured you are being watched over while you enjoy late summer conditions.

‘To find out more you can visit the RNLI website, or download our new Beach Finder app, available free on Android and Apple devices, which also enables you to check real-time weather information, water quality and view lifeguard season dates, patrol times and safety warnings. Our teams will be on duty from 10am in the morning until 6pm in the evening on both Saturday and Sunday and will be delighted to see you.’

Key facts about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
