Kinghorn Lifeboat Stalwart awarded MBE

Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Station was delighted to hear that former Operations Manager Charlie Tulloch has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

The MBE was in recognition of his service to the RNLI at Kinghorn for over 40 years. Charlie joined the lifeboat crew in 1964 as one of the original members of the team following the request by the RNLI to form a lifeboat station in Kinghorn. He served on the crew until he retired from the sea-going crew and stepped into management. He became Operations Manager in 1993 and retired in 2010 after 44 years frontline service at Kinghorn Lifeboat Station.

A delighted Charlie said, “This award came as a huge surprise and a great honour. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the station seeing many changes throughout; four different stations, four classes of lifeboat, and all the people I have had the opportunity to work with over this time.”

“The support I have had throughout has been great, and the goodwill messages over the past week have been overwhelming!”

Kinghorn Lifeboat Operations Manager Paul Wibberley continued, “This is a magnificent award, and thoroughly deserved. We are delighted Charlie Tulloch has been recognised with an MBE. Everyone at the Station is delighted to hear of this fitting and timely award.”

Charlie has not retired completely however, being a regular visitor to the station, and also still serving on the Scottish Lifeboat Council, attending regular meetings.

Key facts about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
