Lifeboats News Release
Lymington RNLI Lifeboat Station to host culmination of a year's fundraising by the Hurricanes Dragonboat club.
As the culmination to a year's fundraising http://www.justgiving.com/teams/HurricanescrewNeedlesChallenge the Hurricanes Dragonboat club (HDC) are scheduled, weather permitting, to arrive at the Bath Road public slipway adjacent to the Lymington RNLI Lifeboat Station at approximately 2.15pm on Bank Holiday Monday 27 August (spare day Tuesday 28) having paddled two 35ft dragon boats from Lee on Solent to Lymington via the Needles, a distance of about 30 nautical miles.
The scheduled route passes close to Calshot RNLI Lifeboat Station and the New Forest National Park shoreline before crossing to the Isle of Wight shore in the Hurst Narrows for the push to the Needles, the aim being to arrive inshore as the tide turns for the run back to Lymington.
HDC are true long distance paddlers having already completed the Great River Race, the London River Marathon and from Fort Augustus to Loch End whilst supporting RNLI Loch Ness in 2011.
Weather permitting and with timing drums beating out the stroke rate, the approach up the Lymington River should make quite a spectacle - all spectators welcome!

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.
The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
