It is with regret that the organisers of the Fowey RNLI Ex Lifeboat Rally, due to take place this weekend on Saturday 16 June, have had to cancel the event due to the predicted shipping forecasts.

The decision was made jointly by the organisers and some of the ex lifeboat owners.

Bob Harris, RNLI crew volunteer at Fowey and one of the organisers, says;

'I would like to offer my apologies to those people who were looking forward to our annual gathering of these wonderful old lifeboats but we have to take notice of the forecast and at present some very strong winds are predicted for the end of the week.  It would be unwise for the owners to set out from their home ports if there's bad weather forecast and we don't want to run the risk of holding a water based event involving the public if there's going to be any suggestion of poor weather. We are all very disappointed in Fowey and I know the ex lifeboat owners are saddened too, but we must heed the RNLI's own safety advice and pay attention to the forecasts.

I'd like to thank all those who have supported the planning for this year's event including the ex lifeboat owners, the Fowey Harbour Master and Commissioners, our sponsors Keltic Fuels and the Fowey RNLI fundraising committee.  Please look out for details of other RNLI fundraising events happening in the port this summer because as a charity, we need donations to continue our work saving lives at sea.'

Key facts about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland from 236 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 180 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
